NON PRESCRIPTION GLASSES
Steve Mower - August 2018
Why would anyone want to wear non prescription glasses?
Well, there are several reasons. First, lets understand prescription glasses.
Prescription glasses requires a prescription, or 'Rx', from an eye doctor. These glasses are manufactured to that prescription with all of the appropriate and proper measurements taken by your Optician.
The prescription may include:
- The same or different powers for each eye. (myopia or hyperopia)
- Correction for astigmatism
- Bifocal ADD Power
- Prism and other specifications.
In most cases, those people requiring corrective lenses need to have their glasses custom made by their Optician because the lenses are complicated. There are so many choices available in single vision, bifocals, progressive lenses, anti-reflective coatings, and thinner high index lenses, that it really is to your advantage to consult with a professional. A good optician will help you wade through the myriad of options based on your particular needs. The optician will also take the measurements appropriate to the type of glasses you need, which is very important, especially for higher prescriptions; bifocal; and progressive wearers.
Please beware of cheap eyeglasses! There is a big difference between cheap and affordable.
Non Prescription Glasses
Glasses that fall into this category would be:
1. Non Prescription Sunglasses- Protects against glare and UV light. Good for driving, fishing, etc.. especially Polarized sunglasses which remove reflected glare.
2. Non Prescription Sports Glasses- A necessity for kids and adults involved with just about any sports activities.
3. Non Prescription Glass for Safety- For tasks requiring eye protection, like construction tasks, motorcycle riding, dentistry, surgery, etc...
4. Attitude Glasses- Clear glasses worn just for a certain 'look'. Some people want to look 'smarter' when going to job interviews and others just want to make a personal fashion statement.
5. Non Prescription Reading Glasses- The lenses in these glasses have magnifying 'power' that allows the wearer to see better at closer distances, whether it be for reading books or medicine bottles, or for crafts that require close detail work.
6. Non Prescription Computer Glasses- At about half the power of reading glasses, these correct vision at your computer screen distance, reducing eye fatigue. See more here.
7. Plano, zero power lenses with a blue block tint or AR coating. Learn about what we offer.
In some cases you can use non prescription reading glasses even if your prescription is a bit more complex. It really depends on several factors which I explain more fully on the Reading Glasses Strength page.
FYI- We can make prescription glasses at ReadingGlassesEtc.com. If you would like prescription lenses, whether for reading or distance, made for any of our Optical Quality frames, you can make a Special Rx Request.
